Banana Flower “Puso ng Saging” Burger
Posted under Filipino Dishes, Snacks

Banana is a common crop in the country and can be planted even in your own backyard. Our family has a small banana plantation which produces banana just for personal consumptions but sometimes we sell it. One of the by-product of banana or plantain (now I know why Banana is called Platanos in Chavacano) is the flower. It’s edible and commonly used in Philippines for Paela, Kari-kari and other Pinoy dishes. When the banana fruit is approaching maturity, the flowers are cut out. So, this banana flower will be our main ingredient today for our Banana Flower (Puso ng Saging) Burger, perfect for snack. I learned to cook this one when I was in level 5 in grade school.
Ingredients:
- Banana Flower, cleaned and cut into small chunks
- 1 TBS salt
- 1 small carrots, chopped into smaller bits
- 1 onion, chopped into smaller bits
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped into smaller bits
- 1 TBS black powdered black pepper
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 TBS butter
- 1 egg
- 1 cup of water
- Bread Buns
- Cheese
- Fresh slices of tomatoes
- Mayonnaise and ketchup
- Fresh slices of cucumber
- Cooking oil
First, you need to clean your banana flowers. Boil enough water until your banana flower chunks is submerge. Add the salt. Boil it until it’s soft. This will help remove the sap. After that, strain it and chopped into smaller pieces and smash it. Set aside.
In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, onions, garlic, and carrots. Then, add the egg, butter and 1 cup water. Mix well, and add the smashed banana flowers. Again, mix until all ingredients are well distributed. Now, you can start deep frying it. Get a small amount of the small and form a circle and flatten it until desired size is achieved. Wait until golden brown and make sure that you won’t burn it. Slice the bread buns into two and put the burger patty and top it with cucumber and tomato slices. Add mayonnaise and cheese.
This is not just cheap and simple snack food but healthy too. Enjoy!
